The leeward side of Mauritius is its west coast. With prevailing winds from the north-east in summer and from the south-east in winter, the west coast of the island is the most sheltered. These waters are now declared by Mission Blue as a Hope Spot due to the diversity of marine life that inhabits them, such as schools of bottlenose dolphins and sperm whales.
