The cold waters of northwest Spain are bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, which fills the Galician Rías Altas and Rías Baixas.
Due to the predominance of north-easterly winds during the summer and the orientation of the estuaries, there is a phenomenon of plankton upwelling that fertilises and fills them with life. These are waters where visibility is usually reduced. However, when the southerly winds bring the long-awaited clearings, we can enjoy this world where the exuberant sessile life provides shelter and food for species of fish, molluscs and crustaceans, forming one of the greatest biodiversities in cold waters in the world. Small dogfish sharks, rays, rays, gobies and blennies of all colours, nudibranchs, gorgonians, sponges, cnidarians and a host of other organisms not as well known as their tropical relatives.
