Leandro Blanco was the first recipient of the Francisco Pizarro Special Award in 2018. Internationally recognised for his career as an underwater filmmaker, he began filming underwater in 1990 and has since accumulated more than 100 international awards.
His first documentary, There's a Place, was entirely made by him - including the music - and won him BBC Wildlife magazine's documentary filmmaker of the year award in 1993. Throughout his career, he has won awards at numerous festivals, most notably Antibes, where he won a record nine consecutive awards. In 2002, he received a special jury prize for three of his best-known short films: Ocean Chronicles, Shame on You and With the Flow.
He has worked for National Geographic, participating in conservation and exploration projects, such as the 24-hour live broadcast of a reef in the Maldives. He was also part of the Elysium expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica.
Leandro Blanco is an international reference in the world of underwater imaging, and his work has been praised by figures such as David Doubilet and Stan Waterman. For all these reasons, at Cimasub we wanted to recognise his contribution with this award named after our founder, Francisco Pizarro.
