In 2019, the Francisco Pizarro Special Prize was awarded to Rafael Herrero Massieu, one of the great references of underwater cinema in Spain.
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1960, Rafael Herrero has dedicated his life to the sea as a professional diver, diving instructor, cameraman and underwater filmmaker. Since 1994 he has run the production company Aquawork, specialising in documentaries on the underwater world.
He has produced more than 20 documentaries, many of them in collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands and the University of Las Palmas, such as the series Canarias y el Mar. He has also worked in close collaboration with the Fundación Canaria Mapfre Guanarteme on marine dissemination projects such as Mar de Nadie or Los Guepardos de las Profundidades.
His work has been broadcasted on channels such as BBC, National Geographic Wild, Canal Plus France, ORF or Xplora Canada. In 2017 he was awarded the Golden Banister of the Cimasub for his documentary Espejo Líquido. In those years he was also part of the production team of the BBC series Blue Planet II.
For his trajectory, his commitment to marine dissemination and his quality as a filmmaker, Rafael Herrero was deserving of the recognition that bears the name of our founder.
