Enrique Talledo, winner of the Francisco Pizarro Special Award at CIMASUB 2024
We are pleased to announce that the prestigious CIMASUB 2024 Francisco Pizarro Special Prize has been awarded to Enrique Talledo, a renowned underwater photographer and documentary filmmaker, whose prolific career and commitment to ocean conservation have made him a leading figure in the protection of marine ecosystems.
Born in Cantabria, Enrique Talledo has dedicated more than 30 years of his life to exploring and documenting the world's seas and oceans, capturing the beauty and fragility of underwater life. His work has spanned more than 30 countries, from coral reefs to cold waters such as Antarctica, South Australia, Vancouver or the North Sea among others, with more than 500,000 photographs and hundreds of hours of filming. In addition, he has participated in 29 scientific oceanographic expeditions and collaborated with important conservation organisations such as the Oceana Foundation.
His lens has immortalised marine biodiversity at its best, from the smallest creatures to the largest predators, always with a clear message: the urgent need to protect our oceans from the growing threats of pollution and overfishing. His images stand out not only for their aesthetic beauty, but also for the stories of survival and balance they reveal, inviting reflection and action.
Talledo is also a veteran of CIMASUB, where he has been awarded on four previous occasions and, since this year, he has been a member of the competition's Jury, which reinforces his close relationship with our competition and his commitment to the dissemination of marine life. His work has been internationally recognised, having been published in media such as National Geographic and The Guardian, and exhibited in galleries all over the world. In 2007, he published his book Cantabria under the sea, a work that reflects his love for the seabed of his native land.
He currently directs ‘Secretos del Oceano’, an environmental education project aimed at young people, with which he continues to inspire future generations to take care of our seas. For his unparalleled career, his tireless work in raising ecological awareness and for being part of the CIMASUB family for so many years, Enrique Talledo has been chosen as the deserving recipient of the Francisco Pizarro Award in this 2024 edition.
Congratulations, Enrique, for this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for inspiring us all to take care of our oceans!
