This year Rafael Herrero Massieu, a great friend of our International Underwater Film Series, will visit us during the week of the Series to present him with the Francisco Pizarro special award as a tribute to a career of international success in the underwater image sector.
Rafael Herrero, born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on 24 March 1960. The sea has always been very present in his life since his beginnings. Professional diver and diving instructor. Underwater filmmaker and cameraman. Director since 1994 of Aquawork, a production company specialising in underwater documentaries.
He has collaborated in numerous projects of the University of Las Palmas and the Government of the Canary Islands. He has made more than 20 documentaries on the underwater world, such as the series of 5 documentaries "Canarias y el Mar", financed by the Government of the Canary Islands.
Since 2009 with the production of the documentary "Mar de Nadie", he has collaborated closely with the Fundación Canaria Mapfre Guanarteme in the dissemination of the marine environment, including the 50-minute documentary "Los Guepardos de las Profundidades" made during 2011 and 2012.
He is a regular contributor to the world's leading television channels such as Canal Plus France, National Geographic Wild, Canal Xplora Canada, ORF, BBC, etc. In the 2017 edition he was awarded the CIMASUB Golden Banister for the documentary "Espejo Líquido" and is currently working with the BBC on the prestigious series Planeta Azul II.
This award is presented every year in memory of our colleague, friend and teacher, Paco Pizarro, who is always present in our hearts as he has left a great mark on our club, the Underwater Activities Section of the Real Sociedad de Fútbol. As the father of the International Underwater Film Series, we offer this special award named after him, which will be presented every year as a tribute to a relevant person in the underwater image sector.
