A different, but as always very exciting, International Underwater Film Cycle
That's right, perhaps the difficulties encountered on the way to organising the event, the many questions that have arisen up to this point, all the changes of plans and the sleepless nights, have made this year's edition even more intense.
As usual in recent years, the Donostia-San Sebastian public has been very enthusiastic about our festival. The unknown about this issue, given the pandemic situation, was also noticeable in the previous days, as well as in all the rest of the organisation processes. But once again, the Teatro Principal has hung up the "sold out" sign and except for Thursday, when some seats were left free, the rest of the days have been filled with warmth and affection for our Season.
This edition, in which the number of works presented has doubled compared to 2018, the quality of the short films and documentaries has been the protagonist. The attendees have highlighted the high level that could be seen on the screen of the Teatro Principal. But above all the variety of styles and genres in which we have been able to learn more about what is happening in our seas. Showing both its infinite beauty and the rawness of suffering in the form of a cry for help to survive extinction and poisoning.
The award winners and participants who visit us in San Sebastian every year at this time have been sorely missed. To be able to share these days with them and to see them up on stage to collect their much-prized "La Concha Banister". But this pandemic has forced us to reinvent ourselves and despite not being able to have them here physically, we have felt them close to us thanks to the thank you videos they have sent us and that we have been able to project in the Teatro Principal. Videos that, on the other hand, have given rise to creativity and to support even more the message of their films, defending the care of our seas.
We would like to remember all the people who have been left out and have not been able to enjoy the beauty of our seas. We would like to remind you that the International Underwater Film Series is still on its way and we will be screening in different towns in Gipuzkoa in December and throughout 2021. We will inform you about it on our website.
We would like to thank the Aquarium and the Foundation of our beloved Real Sociedad for their great work in organising the Txikiciclo, which this year we have also managed to save in complete safety. Children from schools in San Sebastian have been able to enjoy the wonders of the sea and we have been able to transmit to them the need to take care of it and respect it. Last year we had more than 1,200 children all over Gipuzkoa. This year has slowed us down, but we hope that in 2021 we will be able to pick up the pace and increase this figure. They are the future caretakers of our seas and we want to teach them to do their best.
We can only thank everyone. To the audience. To the whole team of Donostia Kultura, especially the Teatro Principal for the great work they do every day to make the cinema a safe place. To our sponsors, institutions and collaborators, because now more than ever they have given their all with us. To the media for their constant support. To all the volunteers and to our colleagues from the Royal Society Underwater for always being there for whatever is needed. And especially, thanks to the participants for sharing with us their talent, their passion and their love for the ocean. They and their work are the heart of our Cycle.
We are still on the move, see you in the cinemas. Good sea.
