Underwater Txikiziklo: educating the next generation of ocean ambassadors
The UNDERWATER TXIKIZIKLO, one of the most outstanding activities of CIMASUB 2024, aims to educate the next generation of environmental defenders. This event, which will take place from 18 to 22 November at the San Sebastian Aquarium, will be attended by more than 600 primary school pupils aged between 10 and 12 from different schools in the city.
The activity, organised by the Royal Society Foundation, aims to encourage respect for the marine environment among the youngest children, creating a deep bond between them and the ocean. Students will participate in screenings of educational short films that address issues such as marine conservation, climate change and underwater biodiversity. The short films will be followed by talks given by experts from the marine world, who will share with the students the problems facing the ocean, as well as solutions to protect it.
In addition to the activities at the Aquarium, the students will carry out preliminary work in their classrooms with educational material provided by the organisation. This material includes activities that will help them reflect on the environmental situation, encouraging attitudes of responsible consumption and respect for nature. The aim is for children not only to acquire knowledge, but also to develop an environmental awareness that will encourage them to act in their daily lives to protect the planet.
One of the most noteworthy aspects of this event is its focus on the Basque language, as both the teaching material and the talks will be given entirely in this language. However, the short films screened may include subtitles in Basque if their original language is another.
UNDERWATER TXIKIZIKLO not only seeks to educate, but also to inspire young people to become ambassadors of the ocean, capable of leading initiatives for the conservation of the seas in the future. By instilling these values from an early age, it is hoped that the children participating in this event will become passionate defenders of the environment, committed to protecting our blue planet.
