Donostia embraces underwater cinema once again and makes CIMASUB 2025 an edition for the history books
The 49th edition of CIMASUB, the Donostia-San Sebastián International Underwater Film Festival, has come to an end and, once again, we can only express our deepest gratitude. Thanks to the underwater imaging professionals who trust this festival to share your work, and thanks to the audience who once again filled the Teatro Principal as if it were the first time, CIMASUB 2025 has been a truly unforgettable edition.
On 13, 14 and 15 November, the Teatro Principal welcomed nearly 1,400 people who came with the same enthusiasm, curiosity and respect that make this festival so great. Their response was exciting and reminds us why Donostia is undoubtedly a magical place for CIMASUB. The selection of 24 short films and documentaries from around the world created a special connection between those who tell stories from the depths and those who receive them from their seats.
This year, more than 500 photographs and over 100 audiovisual works were submitted to the festival, of which 19 short films and 5 documentaries were screened. Each of these works, whether awarded or not, represents the effort, dedication and passion of those who work to show the beauty and threats of the ocean. To all those creators, scientists, adventurers and lovers of the sea: thank you for trusting CIMASUB as a showcase for your talent. You have our commitment that we will work hard to reach as many people as possible and treat it with the care and respect it deserves.
The city also joined in the spirit of the festival with three photographic exhibitions in Garbera, the San Sebastián Aquarium and the Kirol Etxea at the Anoeta Stadium. Thousands of visitors came to enjoy images that speak for themselves and that can only exist thanks to the respect, technique and sensitivity of those who look at the ocean through a lens. To those of you who have exhibited your work this year: thank you for allowing Donostia to dive deep into the sea.
Our gratitude extends with special affection to the younger audience. More than 500 children took part in the Txikiziklo Submarino at the Aquarium, learning, playing and discovering the ocean with contagious curiosity. Seeing their faces full of surprise and excitement reminds us why it is so important to continue educating people about marine conservation. To their families, teachers and schools: thank you for trusting CIMASUB as part of their learning.
The celebration of CIMASUB 2025 in Donostia comes after an extraordinary Tour 24/25. In the last twelve months, the festival has reached more than 26,000 people in 33 locations, with almost 70 underwater film screenings and 21 photographic exhibitions totalling 552 days of exhibition and more than 15,000 visitors. The educational programme has also had a notable impact: 28 editions of Txikiziklo have allowed more than 3,600 children to experience CIMASUB, while Adinziklo Submarino has brought the ocean closer to more than 800 elderly people in nursing homes and day centres.
With the San Sebastian edition now over, the CIMASUB TOUR 25/26 is kicking off, with the aim of surpassing all previous figures and continuing to spread the message of respect, conservation and love for the oceans throughout the peninsula.
The CIMASUB TOUR 25/26 is now beginning, and we are doing so with the renewed energy that you have given us. We take with us every round of applause, every comment, every admiring glance at the screen, and every gesture of support from those of you who believe that art and science can change our relationship with the sea.
We would also like to thank all the institutions, sponsors and collaborating organisations that make this festival possible. Without your commitment, perseverance and trust, none of this would be possible. CIMASUB is not just an event: it is a large family united by the same love for the ocean.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for making CIMASUB 2025 an edition we will always remember. We will continue forward, together, caring for our oceans and telling the story of everything that happens in the sea.
