The sea once again takes center stage in the ZERO ZABOR URETAN 2026 campaign, featuring CIMASUB and the best outdoor underwater film screenings
During the month of July, the Basque coast will once again become a major stage for raising environmental awareness with the seventh edition of ZERO ZABOR URETAN, an initiative led by the MATER Ecoactive Museum Ship, which will visit eight Basque ports with an extensive program of free activities open to the general public. Under the slogan “The best waste is the waste that isn’t generated” the campaign aims to raise awareness about the serious problem of marine debris and promote a change in habits that will help protect our seas.
The initiative is part of the international Plastic Free July movement and aims to involve government agencies, educational institutions, associations, businesses, and the public in a collective process of reflection and action against marine pollution. The message is clear: nearly 80% of the trash that ends up in the ocean comes from land, so reducing waste and consuming more responsibly is in everyone’s hands.
CIMASUB Brings the Best Underwater Films to the Deck of the MATER
Once again this year, CIMASUB—the Donostia-San Sebastián International Underwater Film Festival—is joining forces with ZERO ZABOR URETAN to offer one of the most anticipated events of the summer: outdoor underwater film screenings on the deck of the historic ship MATER.
The screenings will bring together some of the best images of the underwater world in a unique setting, transforming each port into a true movie theater by the sea. This is an exceptional opportunity to discover the richness of the oceans and understand the need to conserve them through the power of images.
The screenings organized by CIMASUB will take place on the following dates:
Bilbao – July 2 | 10:30 p.m. Next to the Itsasmuseum, on the eco-active museum ship MATER.
Mutriku – July 11 | 10:30 p.m. Fishing port, on the eco-active museum ship MATER.
Getaria – July 17 | 10:30 p.m. Fishing port, aboard the eco-active museum ship MATER.
Pasaia (San Pedro) – July 22 | 10:30 p.m. Fishing port, aboard the eco-active museum ship MATER.
MATER Honored with the Francisco Pizarro Award at Cimasub 2025
At this latest edition of CIMASUB, the Ecoactive Museum Ship MATER received special recognition with the awarding of the 2025 Francisco Pizarro Award, a distinction the festival grants to individuals, organizations, or projects whose work stands out for its contribution to the conservation, outreach, and promotion of the marine environment. With this award, CIMASUB sought to recognize the work that the MATER has been carrying out for years as a leader in environmental education and raising awareness about ocean protection.
A Month Full of Activities to Care for the Sea
In addition to underwater film screenings, ZERO ZABOR URETAN will offer a comprehensive program of free activities for all ages. Highlights include guided tours of the MATER Eco-Active Museum Ship and the ITSAS ZAINDARI space, creative recycling workshops, beach cleanups and boat trips to collect marine debris, participatory meetings between organizations and the public, parades featuring the BIO and ZABOR “giants of the sea,” awareness campaigns with local businesses, traveling exhibitions, educational talks for schools, and a volunteer program that will allow participants to experience the campaign from the inside.
All of this has a single goal: to demonstrate that protecting the ocean begins with small, everyday actions and that collective involvement can have a real impact on reducing marine debris.
An Open Invitation to All Citizens
ZERO ZABOR URETAN 2026 invites residents, visitors, and ocean lovers of all ages to visit the participating ports throughout July to enjoy a free, participatory program designed to educate while offering a unique experience.
And among all the events, CIMASUB’s underwater film nights promise to become, once again, one of the highlights of the summer: a perfect blend of culture, education, and excitement to remind us that understanding the ocean is the first step toward wanting to protect it.
