CIMASUB 2024 opens its first session on 21 November at 19:00h. at the Teatro Principal, with free tickets available at the box office, and does so with a powerful selection of short films and documentaries that take us from the most colourful coral reefs to the cold waters of the Atlantic. Each work screened invites us to reflect on the beauty, danger and fragility of the underwater world.
The tour begins with Shark Man - The Depths Within, a short film by Peter Loeseke shot in French Polynesia. In just six minutes, the German director manages to portray the incredible connection between a man and sharks, creatures that have been misunderstood for centuries. Loeseke shows us a different side of these ocean predators, highlighting their majesty and the peace that can be found in the deep sea.
The session continues with Kallaikoi - El mar de las meigas, by Jorge Martínez Vázquez, a work that explores the cold Galician waters and the phenomenon of plankton upwelling in the estuaries. This four-minute short film not only celebrates the biodiversity of the area, but also highlights the mystical connection the inhabitants have with the sea, which is home to creatures such as the dogfish shark and multicoloured nudibranchs. This musical work was awarded the Bronze Banister in the musicals category, and its visual beauty makes it a must-see.
Another gem of the first session is Luca Keller's Metropolis - A Day in Reef City, a fascinating 14-minute journey through the reefs of Indonesia, the Maldives and Timor-Leste. This short film, winner of the Bronze Banner in the short film category, immerses us in the daily life of the reef, from the morning routines of the emperor angelfish to the nocturnal hunt of the wunderpus. Keller reminds us of the importance of conserving these ecosystems, which are as vibrant as they are fragile.
Filmmaker Damián Ramos Díaz also surprises us with Swimming with Ghosts, a work that narrates his struggle for conservation in the overexploited archipelago of the Canary Islands. Only seven minutes long, this short film, which won the Donostia Kultura award for best new videographer, captures the lowest point in the life of its protagonist, just before he finds hope in the sea.
The first session closes with Urak Lawoi, Brothers of the Sea, a 70-minute documentary directed by Telmo Iragorri and Manuel Coronado. The work, filmed in Thailand, narrates the life of the Urak Lawoi, a fishing village that has built its culture around the sea. The documentary, which won the Bronze Banner in the documentary category, explores how ancestral fishing techniques endanger this community, and leaves us with a profound reflection on the need to preserve these traditions and the marine balance.
