The Francisco Pizarro Award from Cimasub 2025 will go to the Ecoactive Museum Ship MATER.
At the next edition of CIMASUB, we will have the honor of presenting the Francisco Pizarro Award to the Ecoactive Museum Ship MATER, in recognition of its commitment, passion, and consistency in defending the sea.
This award, the most special of the festival, is named after our founder and is given to those who embody the values that inspire Cimasub: love for the ocean, outreach, environmental education, and marine conservation.
A living museum that sails for environmental awareness
The MATER, based in Pasaia (Gipuzkoa), is much more than a boat. It is the last great Basque wooden tuna boat, rescued from scrapping by the Itsas Gela - Aula del Mar association and transformed into a floating museum and environmental education center. It is an example of how maritime heritage can be transformed into an active tool for social and ecological change.
MATER also plays a key role in the Txikiziklo Submarino educational activity, organized by Cimasub, contributing its experience and dedication to bringing the marine world closer to children. MATER encourages curiosity and respect for the ocean, ensuring that the experience is both educational and fun, making every child feel like an active part of this underwater learning cycle.
A well-deserved recognition
The Francisco Pizarro Award is Cimasub's most special award and is given to those who, through their work and example, embody the values that inspire the festival. The Subacuaticas Real Sociedad team evaluates four main aspects: career in underwater imaging, commitment to marine conservation and outreach, inspirational character, and connection to the spirit of Cimasub.
The Ecoactive Museum Ship MATER meets each of these criteria with excellence. Its track record is an example of how audiovisual language, direct experience, and outreach can become a powerful tool for connecting people and the sea. Its environmental education work and citizen participation projects have contributed decisively to raising awareness about marine conservation and promoting respect for biodiversity.
Moreover, the MATER possesses a deeply inspiring character: its story of transformation —from a traditional fishing boat to an eco-active museum— transcends borders and awakens vocations, bringing the sea closer to a wide range of audiences, from schoolchildren to ocean enthusiasts.
Finally, its way of working fully reflects the spirit of Cimasub: passion, commitment, pioneering spirit, educational vocation, and generosity in sharing a love for the sea. For all these reasons, the MATER perfectly embodies the essence of the Francisco Pizarro Award and becomes a well-deserved reference for those who believe in a bluer, more conscious future.
Know to protect
We invite all ocean lovers to discover the work of the MATER at www.mater.eus and to join us in this commitment to the sea. Because caring for the ocean begins with knowing it. And few initiatives do it as well as the MATER.
