The ocean in images: CIMASUB’s photographic exhibitions fill San Sebastián with underwater life
This November, San Sebastián will dive into the depths of the ocean thanks to the CIMASUB 2025 photography exhibitions, which will transform the city into a veritable showcase of the beauty and diversity of the underwater world. Through the lenses of some of the best photographers on the planet, the public will be able to discover reefs teeming with life, abyssal landscapes, and marine creatures that inhabit the most surprising corners of the sea.
The exhibitions can be visited in three emblematic venues in the city:
Nautilus Room at the Aquarium, from November 3 to 28
Garbera Shopping Center, from November 1 to 16
Kirol Etxea at the Anoeta Stadium, throughout the month of November
This year, the festival brought together more than 50 international photographers who submitted over 500 images to the annual competition. From among these, the most outstanding photographs were selected and, thanks to the sponsorship of the San Sebastián Aquarium, make up these three exhibitions that transport visitors to the heart of the ocean.
Among the award-winning artists are Joan Barcia Ubeda (Barcelona), winner of the Golden Railing; Daniel Sly (Australia), Silver Railing; and Miguel Ramírez (France), Bronze Railing.
The IUCN Award went to Isaías Cruz (Navarra) for the best photograph promoting environmental awareness, while Félix Aguado (Gipuzkoa) was recognized for the best gallery of the Cantabrian Sea. The female photographer award went to Merche Llobera (Madrid).
In addition to the award winners, the exhibition includes works by renowned international photographers such as Gabriel Jensen (United States), Aldo Gustavo Galante (Argentina), Bingqian Gao (China), and Michal Štros (Czech Republic), among many other great underwater photographers. Each image is a visual testimony to the majesty of the ocean and a call to reflect on the need to protect it.
Beyond their artistic value, these exhibitions have a profound educational and environmental message. Through photography, CIMASUB seeks to raise public awareness of the fragility of the underwater world and the urgency of taking action against climate change and marine pollution.
And the experience does not stop there. After their stay in Donostia, the exhibitions will form part of the CIMASUB Tour 25/26, a tour that will bring the magic of the ocean and ecological commitment to different locations in the Basque Country throughout the year.
In short, the CIMASUB photo exhibitions are a must-see for anyone who wants to contemplate the beauty of the sea and be inspired by the talent of the best underwater photographers on the planet.
