Cimasub 2024, an Unforgettable Success Thanks to All of You
Cimasub 2024 has come to an end, and we couldn’t be more thrilled and grateful for everything we experienced during this edition (All the photos of the gala at the end of the article). This Saturday, at a closing gala that will remain etched in everyone’s memory, we celebrated the best of underwater cinema and paid tribute to the extraordinary creators who brought stories connecting us to the sea to life.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of the Barandilla de Oro and the Real Sociedad Fundazioa Award for Best Documentary, which this year was awarded to Nika, the Tropical Pilot Whale, a remarkable work by Tenerife filmmakers Felipe Ravina, José Hernández, and Mirna A. Piñeiro. The standing ovation from an emotional audience perfectly reflected the impact this work has had on all of us.
We had the honor of welcoming many award winners to Donostia, who traveled from various parts of the country to join us in this celebration: the aforementioned José Hernández, Felipe Ravina, and Mirna A. Piñeiro (Tenerife); Telmo Iragorri, Manuel Coronado and Raul Azuara (Donostia and Madrid), José Irisarri (Vigo); David Galvañ Fernández (Alicante); Jorge Martínez Vázquez (La Coruña); Carlos Villoch (Vizcaya); Joan Barcia Ubeda (Catalonia); Merche Llobera (Madrid); Diego Carral Maceiras and Daniel Landa Quiroga (Gipuzkoa). Additionally, we had the privilege of honoring Enrique Talledo from Cantabria, who received the Francisco Pizarro Award for Underwater Excellence from the Real Sociedad, recognizing his admirable career.
We would also like to highlight the sponsors and collaborators who joined us on stage during the awards ceremony to share this special moment: Asier Olano, President of Subacuáticas Real Sociedad; José Miguel Beltrán, Film Director of Donostia Kultura; Ana Priede, Director of Cooperation for the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council; Maite Azkoaga, Real Sociedad Board Member; José Ignacio Espel, President of the Aquarium; Micaela Fernández, Marketing Executive at PADI; Gorka Etxebeste Arruabarrena, Director of Radio Miramón representing EITB; Javier Mendoza, President of the Gipuzkoa Federation of Underwater Activities; Jaime Caballero, President of the Siempre Adelante Association; Rol Freeman, Head of AOLDE Radio; and Emma Pettersson, Specialist at the IUCN Coral Protection Group. Their support and commitment were essential in making Cimasub a unique festival.
We are particularly proud of the warm reception you gave the festival. Over three days of screenings, the theater was packed to capacity with "Sold Out" signs, and the excitement and enthusiasm of the attendees energized us. The exhibitions at the Aquarium, Garbera Shopping Center, and Kirol Etxea at the Reale Arena drew thousands of visitors, showing that the sea remains an inexhaustible source of curiosity and learning for everyone.
The Txikiziklo, aimed at the youngest audiences, was also a great success. More than 500 students from Donostia schools participated in this activity at the Aquarium, learning about the importance of caring for our oceans while enjoying inspiring and educational cinema.
Thanks to all of you, Cimasub 2024 has been a resounding success. From the organizing team, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for joining us, sharing our passion for the sea, and helping make this festival such a special event. We continue to work enthusiastically to keep Cimasub growing, and we already look forward to welcoming you with open arms at the next edition. Thank you for being part of this underwater adventure!
