HONDARRIBIA hosts its first International Underwater Film Series on 12 and 13 March
We present the programme of the 1st edition of the International Underwater Film Series of HONDARRIBIA, the CIMASUB 2020. This event is still the best way to take a trip around the planet, visiting the most spectacular seabed and showing us the global nature of the problem of marine pollution and climate change. PROJECTIONS:
On 12, and 13 March, screenings of the best of international underwater cinema with 18 short films and 2 documentaries spread over the two days. It will be held in the Itsas Etxea Auditorium from 19:30 to 21:00h.
The quality of the works presented in our Donostia - San Sebastian competition grows every year, both visually and narratively. The format is changing, the number of short films is growing and the intensity of their presentation is increasing. Documentaries are becoming more and more fast-paced, we are moving away from the classic slower documentary and moving towards a more dynamic and entertaining narrative. All of this means that we are reaching more people and attracting a greater number of audiences. As always, all events and screenings are FREE ENTRANCE until full capacity is reached.
We want to show our great satisfaction and motivation with the progress of the Cycle. We have been in Donostia for 43 editions and in recent years the audience has grown and we have received a much younger audience. More than 4,000 people in all the events of the Cycle throughout 2019. We have increased our coverage, in addition to Donostia-San Sebastián (43 editions), Lasarte-Oria (12 editions), Irun (28 editions) we have held the cycle in Errenteria and Lezo... and we are closing dates for 2020 with Eibar, Zumaia, among others.
After 43 editions, the Underwater Film Series is at one of its best moments... For 43 editions we have been making the seabed known, showing all its beauty from all corners of the planet... But we are aware that unfortunately the current interest in the seabed is not due to the wonders it hides, but rather because of the disaster we have caused in it. Edition after edition, marine pollution has been taking centre stage in the works that amateurs and professionals of the underwater image sector have presented in our Cycle. So much so, that most of the works now leave a space to talk about marine litter or even make it the central theme. We continue to reward the best works with ecological denunciation, as those who spend most time underwater have a lot to tell, and that message must reach everyone to achieve a real, serious and definitive awareness.
We continue to be the International Underwater Film Series of reference. We have received works from countries from several continents. Among which we have winners from France, Argentina, Italy, among others, and also national ones, from Euskadi, Navarra, Cantabria, Canary Islands, Madrid, Catalonia, among others. This year with a special tribute to our underwater image professional with the greatest international impact Rafael Herrero Massieu.
Thanks as always to our sponsors, the Hondarribia City Council and the Real Sociedad de Fútbol Foundation. Thanks to all of them, we can offer CIMASUB with FREE ADMISSION to the entire programme.

Bidasoa urdin odola Mak Iriarte Iparrea : 8 minutes : Basque Coast *** Best video of the Bay of Biscay (EUSKO JAURLARITZA Award - BASQUE GOVERNMENT)
I am from this land, I was born here, a humid region with a particular climate. We are in the Bidasoa. Its natural wealth, its fauna, all this is an attraction that awakens our inner self, it takes us to the heart of its entrails to surprise us with an explosion of life. I am a photographer and I love this environment, I feel it from the inside. But my real frontier to explore lies here... The Sea.
Our coastline has an aspect of steep cliffs with a rocky coastline. In winter it is a rough and fierce sea. In order to appreciate the beauty of our underwater depths, it is necessary to have a certain amount of preparation, a better knowledge of this environment, to know where and what to look for. There is no centimetre of unoccupied land on this kind of seabed. The struggle for life is at the same time a struggle for space; many species choke others by growing above them. In this space we will also travel to the open sea to meet the nomads of the sea, the real protagonists of this odyssey.
Dream, whale, emotions. The director has also become the protagonist of this adventure, and has tried to express through images, sounds and words, all the emotions he felt during the nine days of filming.

To see and be seen is what drives people these days. Seeing and not being seen is what drives survival below the surface. The sands of the seabed provide protection. Camouflage is the key to a world of illusions underwater. What is really there? What do you really see? This engaging game of perception is the theme of this new underwater short film. In Sandy Illusions, the Spanish Costa Brava reveals the illusions of the desert of the sea.
The adventure of living Juan Raya Rodríguez | 4 minutes | Red Sea, Tenerife and El Hierro *** Bronze Banister in the short film category
Living is an adventure, and every day we are invaded by harmful thoughts and situations, rightly or wrongly, that prevent us from living intensely every minute of our life, because there are not so many of them; and we do not take advantage of it as we should. The adventure of living invites us to reflect on how important and beautiful life is. To value it and be happy accepting and enjoying everything that surrounds us.
You have to enjoy every minute; and if you like something, fight to achieve it. You can't change the world, but you can contribute to a better life by doing what you like the most, leaving behind bad thoughts and worries. Learn to channel your energies. Live with enthusiasm and passion, doing your best, as if each day were your last. Immersing yourself in the big blue and admiring the marvellous marine world can transmit all this feeling and passion for life. The small makes you big and the big makes you infinite. It only matters the colour and perspective with which you look at it. Live and be happy.
